about

Stephen Foster, grew up in Pittsburgh, wrote for Kentucky. Me too. I first heard this tune in the movie “Gloria” with Mare Winingham and Jennifer Jason Leigh (or is that Bridget Fonda?) but not until Peter Mulvey’s version on “Glencree” did it finally register.

lyrics

let us pause in life’s pleasures
and count the many tears
while we all sup sorrow with the poor
there’s a song that will linger forever in our ears
o, hard times come again no more

//it’s the song, the sigh of the weary
hard times, hard times
come again no more
many days you have lingered
around my cabin door
o, hard times come again no more

while we seek mirth and beauty
our spirits light and gay
there a frail forms
failing at the door
though their voices are silent
their pleading looks do say
o, hard times come again no more//
