about

When the Ukraine war started I wanted to do something, despite knowing I could do really, nothing. So I went online and started looking for Ukrainian folk music, without really knowing what was out there. What I found was the Polyphony Project (www.polyphonyproject.com/en) a group of folklorists and ethnomusicologists who are recording old Ukrainian Folk Songs sung by old Ukrainian (mostly) women. I was blown away by the power and the pathos of these songs. So I decided to add beats to them. The beats actually kind of diminish the power of the original songs, but make them more accessible. As I was making the video for this song, I added audio from instagram and TikTok videos to the track. The Air Raid sirens are from Kiev, the violin is a young girl playing in a bomb shelter during a raid. And the piano at the end is a young woman playing her piano in her bombed out apartment. You can see all this in the video.

lyrics

I don't know if its because there's like an "old Ukrainian" that these ladies are singing in or what, but these lyrics basically break Google Translate.

But as near as I can figure, the jist of the song is a conversation between a young girl and her Cossack lover. She says "Who will hold me while you're gone" and he says, "Find someone else, for I probably won't return"
